Witches of Legend
Witches have been known since the beginning of time.
In ancient Sumeria and Babylonia it was that the world was full of spirits and that most of these spirits were hostile. They believed that each person had their own spirit to protect them from their demons and enemies. They also believed that the only way to fight these demons was with the use of magic in the form of amulets, incantations and exorcisms.
Witches in Ancient Egypt were revered for their wisdom and knowledge. They understood the use of amulets, incantations, and spells to bend the cosmic powers to the will of their customer or their own for the benefit of all.
While the Greeks used a form of magick called Theurgy. This was very close to a religion, while a lower form of magic, called mageia was closer to sorcery. The witches of that time, claimed to have knowledge, spells, and abilities to either hurt the enemy of the client or help the client.
While the Romans were not to practice witchcraft or sorcery. It was felt that if they did, then they would threaten the very society in which they lived. Anyone in Roman society who was caught saying spells, making incantations or practicing sorcery of any form were captured, tortured and killed per the law.
Throughout history...there have been women accused of something they weren't because they were independent and different...
And in modern society...there are so many shows available about witches....that of course are make believe..but fun to watch...with magical powers.....
